We need Time
Industry and crafts are two important sectors for the production of the fashion sector in our country. Each with its own characteristics contributes significantly to the increase not only of the Italian gross domestic product, but also to the diffusion of Made in Italy brands throughout the world.
However, one of the factors that differentiate them in a decisive way is time.
In the same period in which an industrial process produces 1000 pairs, we make 4. This is not an advantage or a disadvantage, but simply a different type of production organization.
The industry has machinery for serial production, which allow a considerable saving of time, however, depending on serial items, all the same, always available.
This model is very different from ours, which is based instead on customization and therefore on the uniqueness of the products: by making one piece at a time we can create an unparalleled original product for the customer, but this involves a longer wait.
But personalization isn’t the only difference.
In fact, if the industry is part of the fast fashion phenomenon, which every year contributes to the increase of considerable waste materials and articles that last only one season, craftsmanship with its slow fashion has the possibility of producing on sales, using only the necessary materials, consequently reducing waste materials.
This is why we need time to create our sandals, because each of our products is created by hand with much longer processing times than those of a mass-produced industrial product.
In fact, to realize a Mario Doni sandal, we take about seven days, because we make one piece at a time and each time we start from the use of leather to create the sole, the insole and the heel, we cut and assemble the upper part in vegetable-tanned leather, always following the customer’s choices, his modifications or special requests.
It takes time to devote time to researching sustainable and quality materials to best meet the need not only for comfort and appearance, but also for long-lasting use and repairability.
Each order is a new challenge that we face together, because by hand coloring each sandal we can give it greater uniqueness, with shades and contrasts that leather and hide take on in each of their components, thus trying to enhance not only the craftsmanship and manual processing, but also the quality of the leather, but this process is not very controllable and each time the result is different and the challenge continues.
